Remote biotech education platform led by David Kong's Community Biotechnology Initiative
Not yet built as of 2026 - included here because it’s a significant development for the community bio movement.
The MIT Media Lab was awarded a $1M “Gamechanger Grant” from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (announced July 24, 2026) to launch a “Cloud Laboratory for Learning”: a platform enabling anyone with only an internet connection and a computer to remotely conduct real laboratory experiments in biology, AI, and robotics. It’s led by David Kong, Director of the Media Lab’s Community Biotechnology Initiative (CBI) - which also organizes the Global Community Bio Summit - with an initial geographic focus on Cambridge, Boston, Lowell, and Worcester, MA. The grant is part of a larger $12.3M statewide investment in life sciences education across 68 Massachusetts organizations.
